BESL & Subcontractors Launch Student Reading Buddy Scheme

At Cantonian High School, something quietly wonderful has begun.

Every fortnight, nine young pupils gather for more than just a reading session — they gather for encouragement, confidence, and connection. As the Interim Principal Contractor of Fairwater Community Campus, BESL and our dedicated subcontractors have launched a reading buddy scheme to contribute to making a positive impact on the local community.

This new scheme pairs students with supportive adults who’ve committed their time to something meaningful. It started following Year 7 reading assessments which identified some pupils as needing additional encouragement. The scheme was designed to improve pupil’s reading skills, build confidence, and encourage a love of reading.

It’s a simple idea, but its impact is deep. In those shared moments, shy readers begin to speak a little louder. Hesitant readers begin to read a little smoother. And in return, each adult walks away with something just as valuable: the joy of helping a child grow, one story at a time.

At Cantonian High School, a new story is being written — one of support, community, and the transformative power of reading together. We are proud to be volunteering our time to support the first of many students who will benefit from the new Fairwater Community Campus.
