The Glo Aur walk is an annual fund-raiser to remember the 114 miners who lost their lives in the Cymmer Colliery mine explosion in 1856. Last week, staff from the Fairwater Community Campus site, alongside staff and students from Cantonian High School and staff from Insole Court, took part in the occasion by either walking or cycling 17 miles from the site of the incident in Pontypridd, to Insole Court in Cardiff (the former home of the mine’s owner).

We were met at the starting point by the local Mayor who handed each student a piece of coal to carry with them on the walk, which was also blessed by a local priest in memory of those who died in the explosion. The students then exchanged the coal at the end of the walk for a piece of gold covered stone as a memory of their participation, and some fruit to give them some well needed energy after the tiring day.

For Cantonian High School, this marks the 13th year they have completed the walk and although this was our first time being involved, we were honoured to be included in connection with our involvement with the high’s schools future new location at the Fairwater Community Campus.

BESL were pleased to sponsor the cost of the coach to get to the departure point as well as raise some additional funds for the charity. A special thank you also goes to LA industrial who kindly supplied the T Shirts for Cantonian High School, BESL staff and Insole Court staff to wear.
