Before the half-term break, Cantonian’s Construction & Environmental Ambassadors visited the new school site for the first time — a chance to explore the developing building, meet their leads, and gain an introduction to site safety, layout and the plans ahead.
Ambassadors will return once a month to take part in activities linked to either construction or environmental learning. On November 21st, the Construction Ambassadors will begin their first session with Planner, Ian Jones, where they’ll learn how to plan a construction job and understand how their time on the programme will develop. The Environmental Ambassadors will then begin with an introduction to carbon and the principles behind creating more sustainable buildings.

During their visit, pupils were able to experience the scale of the new Cantonian building up close.
Naomi Leung shared her thoughts on the day:
“I really enjoyed the tour around and in the new building, and I think it’s huge! I feel like it’s going to be a great school building for pupils in the future, and I’m excited to be moving into the new building next year.
I really like the design of the hall because it also comes with lots of seating, and I think that’s a smart idea — especially for us Cantonian pupils because we have lots of new Year Sevens as well as other year groups. In conclusion, I’d say I’d love to do any activity with Sarah again. I really do.”
For many, the visit provided a first real insight into how a large construction project works.
Yuwani Gamage said:
"I really enjoyed my visit to our school construction site; it was a broad experience and opportunity. The BESL team were nice and wonderful. This is a fantastic opportunity for students who are interested in construction and how they make new buildings sustainable.
I really liked the way they explained everything. The BESL team were wonderful — they taught us all kinds of things, and it was impressive. I think that in the future they will do lots of interesting things with us. I really liked every part of the visit; it was good. I really want to thank the BESL team for this wonderful opportunity and for having us. I can’t wait to do this again.”
The ambassador programme will continue to give pupils practical, meaningful involvement in the project as their school takes shape — offering opportunities to learn directly from the teams working on site and to see the progress of the new building over the coming months.
