When Rumney Primary School reached out asking for pallets and cable reels, it sparked a fantastic community collaboration that transformed the nursery’s outdoor area into a bright, welcoming and inspiring space for children aged 3 – 5.
The journey began when we contacted the team at Project Spaceforge, who kindly sourced and donated two cable reels along with a number of pallets to support the school.
We later visited Rumney Primary School to explore the possibility of creating a water wall from the pallets, something we have successfully delivered previously at two primary schools and a nursery. During the visit, it became clear just how passionate the school was about creating an exciting and nurturing environment for the children. They had ambitions to refresh the nursery’s outdoor area by painting the perimeter fencing and completing wall painting work that had originally been started the previous year with the support of parents.
We managed to assemble a brilliant team for a volunteer day at the school who came together to give the nursery’s outdoor space a complete makeover and with the support of the team at Integrated Fencing painted the fencing surrounding the nursery, refreshed the walls with a new coat of paint, dug out and improved the planting area, installed sleepers and filled the space with fresh topsoil ready for planting and jet washed the canopy area, removing grime and old paint to brighten the entire space. By the end of the day, the nursery outdoor area had been completely revitalised.
Although the original pallets were not ultimately used to create water walls, the project was shared with subcontractors and Willis Systems generously offered to manufacture bespoke water walls specifically for the school. These were installed at a later date, allowing the nursery children to benefit from an engaging and interactive outdoor learning feature.
Projects like this highlight the true value of collaboration and community spirit. Creating a lasting legacy in the areas where we work is incredibly important to us at BESL, and bringing together our teams, subcontractors and local schools to make a meaningful difference is what social value is all about.
A special thank you also goes to John Paul and the team at Beton Bauen, who were working at the school during the project. Although they were not directly involved in the volunteering day itself, they were more than happy to assist by moving pallets and lending tools to help the team complete the work.
