BESL recently had the pleasure of working with Lakeside Primary School after being invited to support Year 3 pupils with their current learning topic: water wastage.

As part of our commitment to engaging with local communities and inspiring future generations, we visited the school to deliver an interactive and educational session with a construction and mechanical services focus. Starting off with a presentation to 59 pupils, our team shared important facts about how water is wasted in everyday life, and the simple changes we can all make to help conserve it. The session encouraged pupils to think about sustainability in a practical and relatable way, while also introducing them to how these issues are managed within the construction industry.

To bring the topic to life, we then led a hands-on activity that quickly became a highlight of the day. Working in groups of four, pupils took on the roles of either “rebels” or “heroes.” The rebels were tasked with creating leaks on a demonstration board, while the heroes worked together to identify and fix the leaks, giving the children an exciting insight into the mechanical side of construction and the importance of maintenance and problem-solving.

The activity provided a fun and interactive way to introduce pupils to the world of mechanical services while reinforcing the importance of reducing water waste. The pupils fully embraced the experience, especially the opportunity to wear PPE and take part in practical tasks similar to those carried out on real sites.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Lakeside Primary School for inviting us to be part of such a valuable learning experience. It was fantastic to see the pupils so enthusiastic, engaged, and eager to learn.

Sessions like these are a great way to inspire young people, introduce them to the variety of careers within construction and mechanical services, and encourage positive conversations around sustainability from an early age. Most importantly, the pupils appeared to enjoy the experience just as much as we did.
